The next issue of Fidelis government bonds intended for the population will take place between December 9 and 18, said yesterday Ştefan Nanu, Director General of the General Directorate of Treasury and Public Debt, within the Ministry of Finance, on the occasion of the event that marked the listing on the Stock Exchange Bucharest (BVB) of the latest Fidelis offer.
According to the representative of the Ministry of Finance, although the amounts drawn from the population are increasing, Romania is still behind other countries in the region in terms of public debt financing by individuals.
"Although we came up with one Fidelis show every two months, the amounts sold in each edition increased. So there is still potential to increase the amounts even if we increase the frequency. In our area, Romania is still far behind in terms of the share of retail investors in the total debt (public n.r.), which means that the potential is great. And if we look at the banking indicators, the liquidity indicators, we see that saving has increased, in the context in which salary income has increased and there is potential for further growth", said Ştefan Nanu.
According to him, Finance is considering the development of government securities distribution channels to attract more investors from the diaspora.
"Romanians invest more and more in the medium term. In this edition, the five-year maturities sold very well. 1.5 billion (no. of lei) is an amount that we sold in a single issue on all tranches. And if we accumulate the latest editions of Tezaur and Fidelis shows, the sales are over five billion lei, which is equivalent to an amount of Eurobonds. It is also an amount almost equivalent to what we take from the interbank market in a month. It's a tool that's paying off, and we think we can even improve it. We are considering a distribution channel for the other government securities program (n.r. Tezaur), with which we hope to address the diaspora even more", pointed out Ştefan Nanu.
Through the last issue of Fidelis government bonds, the Ministry of Finance attracted over 1.5 billion lei and 387 million euros, this being the fifth public offering carried out in 2024 through the mechanisms of the capital market. It was the largest amount attracted by Finance through a Fidelis issue, surpassing the previous record, from August, of almost 3.2 billion lei. Through the 19 offers carried out since August 2020, the Ministry of Finance attracted over 38 billion lei (7.8 billion euros) from the population, according to an announcement by the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
